Acclaimed TV host Ahmed Fayek welcomed engineer Mohamed Al-Moatasem Bahaa on the TV program “Egypt Can” on DMC, following his win of the silver medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions for a groundbreaking project that merges biomanufacturing with artificial intelligence.

The project relies on cultivating algae and plants inside advanced greenhouses fully operated by AI technologies, ensuring maximum efficiency and high-quality production.

The system does not require fresh water or traditional farmland. Instead, production takes place in water-based systems using groundwater, with the ability to tolerate high salinity levels, making it ideal for “protein production in the heart of the desert.”

Raw protein is extracted from these plants to be used in producing plant-based meat and cheese, products that are witnessing huge demand in European markets seeking healthier and more sustainable alternatives.

Spirulina algae contains up to 65% protein, along with Omega-3 and vitamins A and K. Water lentils contain around 40% protein and are known for their rapid growth, doubling in size every 24 hours.

Mohamed Al-Moatasem revealed that the company has already begun exporting its products abroad and has secured sales agreements with European clients exceeding $2.1 million.

The project is led by a team of 15 to 20 young professionals from diverse fields including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy. Most are graduates of Zewail City and the American University in Cairo, with support from the Academy of Scientific Research and the “Shark Tank Egypt” program.

Ahmed Fayek praised the initiative as a strong model of collaboration between scientific research and industry, highlighting the ability of Egyptian youth to compete globally with sustainable innovations that address major food security challenges.
