In a major boost to scientific research and Egypt’s standing on the global discovery map, New Valley University has announced an exceptional international scientific breakthrough: the documentation of fossil remains belonging to the first giant leatherback sea turtle dating back to the Cretaceous period, around 66 million years ago, discovered in the Dakhla Oasis.

This remarkable find represents a significant addition to the fossil record in both Egypt and Africa. The study has been published in the prestigious international journal Cretaceous Research, highlighting the quality and global competitiveness of Egyptian scientific research.

The university emphasized that this discovery opens new horizons for understanding ancient life, offering valuable evidence about the tropical marine environment that once dominated southern Egypt during that era. These conditions allowed giant marine creatures to thrive before the extinction of the dinosaurs.

It also reflects the expertise of Egyptian researchers and their use of advanced methodologies in vertebrate paleontology, reinforcing the role of universities as leading research institutions that drive knowledge production and contribute to science and natural heritage.

New Valley University continues to support advanced scientific research, paving the way for further discoveries that uncover the secrets of Egypt’s geological history and strengthen its position as a distinguished regional and international hub for earth sciences and paleontology.
