United Media Services mourned with profound sadness and deep sorrow the passing of renowned director Dawoud Abdel Sayed, one of the most important icons of Egyptian and Arab cinema, and the creator of a singular artistic journey that touched the collective conscience and posed honest and profound questions about humanity and society.
 
In a statement, UMS said: The late director was a rare example of the cultured creative mind, who presented timeless works that boldly and truthfully addressed human and social issues, contributing to the consolidation of Egyptian cinema’s role as a tool for enlightenment.
 
United Media Services extended its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and to his audience in Egypt and the Arab world, affirming that his artistic and intellectual legacy will remain ever-present, and that his works will continue to stand as testimony to an exceptional talent and an enduring vision. 

Egyptian filmmaker Dawoud Abdel Sayed passed away on Saturday after a long battle with illness, at the age of 79.

 

Abdel Sayed is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Egyptian and Arab cinema. Throughout his distinguished career, he delivered a remarkable body of work that enriched Egyptian cinema, marked by deep vision, a unique style, and a strong artistic identity.

 

During his long artistic journey, he directed numerous landmark films that left a lasting impact on the history of Egyptian cinema. Among his most celebrated works are Al-Sa‘alik (The Vagabonds), El Bahes An El Sayed Marzouk (The Search for Mr. Marzouk)El-Kit Kat, Ard El Ahlam (Land of Dreams), Ard El Khoof (Land of Fear), Mowaten W Mokber W Haramy (Citizen, Informer and Thief), Rasayel El Baher (Messages of the Sea), and Sarek El Farah (The Thief of Joy) among others.

 

In addition to directing, Abdel Sayed was also a writer. This dual role gave his films a distinctive completeness, seamlessly blending powerful storytelling with a clear and personal directorial vision.
