The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) has officially re-elected Egyptian film critic Ahmed Shawky as its president for a new term running through 2029.
The decision came with unanimous support from representatives of 29 countries during the General Assembly elections, appointing Shawky to lead a newly elected board that includes three vice presidents: Italian critic Paola Casella, Ukrainian critic Elena Rubashevska, and Macedonian critic Marina Kostova.
In addition to his international role, Shawky also serves as the head of the Egyptian Film Critics Association, which has represented Egypt within FIPRESCI since its founding in 1972.
This year’s General Assembly also approved a major change to the federation’s bylaws: the organization’s headquarters will now be based in the city of the president rather than that of the secretary general.
That means Cairo will serve as FIPRESCI’s home for the next four years—marking the first time in 38 years that the headquarters moves from its long-standing base in Munich, Germany.
