In an official statement, Mostafa Kamel, head of Egypt’s Musicians Syndicate, announced the suspension of Lebanese star Ragheb Alama from performing in Egypt and has summoned him for investigation following what he described as “inappropriate behavior” during a recent concert.
Kamel stated:
“Over the past two days, I’ve witnessed disgraceful conduct that blatantly violates Egyptian values, traditions, and societal norms. This behavior has no place on the land of Umm Kulthum, Abdel Wahab, and Abdel Halim — legends who embodied the essence of Arab art. Egyptian stages have always welcomed true artists, not scenes filled with suggestive gestures, inappropriate kisses, and repulsive embraces.”
He added:
“With all due respect to my dear friend Mr. Farid Bou Saeed, head of Lebanon’s Musicians Syndicate, and to the cherished Lebanese people, we at Egypt’s Musicians Syndicate — myself and the board — have decided the following:
1. Summoning Ragheb Alama to the Syndicate’s headquarters in Egypt for questioning over his deliberate breach of Egyptian customs and traditions.
2. Suspending his license to perform in Egypt until the investigation is concluded.
3. Coordinating with the Chamber of Tourism Establishments to meet with their representatives and summon the venue owner that hosted the concert, which we consider a blatant and deliberate offense to Egyptian values and norms.”
The Syndicate emphasized its commitment to preserving the dignity and legacy of Egyptian art and culture.
