In a dramatic new move, US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States, escalating global trade tensions and shaking up the entertainment world.
Claiming that Hollywood is “dying a very fast death,” Trump blamed what he called an international scheme—countries offering aggressive incentives to lure filmmakers abroad.
Declaring the issue a “National Security threat,” he said the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative would begin implementing the tariffs immediately.
Industry unions warn the decision could deliver a devastating blow to American filmmaking, which has already seen a steady migration of productions to countries like the UK and Canada for cheaper costs and tax breaks.
