CAIRO – 24 July 2017: Drama/Mystery film ‘The Sacrifice’ (1986) will be screening in Cairo’s Magnolia Leaves of Arts Cinema in Zamalek on July 26.

Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, the film revolves around a man, Alexander, who was haply celebrating his birthday when he received news of the beginning of World War II; he is so attached to his peaceful life that he is ready to give up his family to avoid post-war trauma and he therefore bargains with god to restore peace for the world in return for his family.

Starring Erland Josephson, Susan Fleetwood, and Allan Edwall among others, the film has won a BAFTA award in 1988 for Best Foreign Language Film and has won four awards in the Cannes Festival Film in 1986, among other awards, as was nominated for Palme d’Or Award.

Filmed in Sweden, ‘The Sacrifice’ has been reviewed by The Guardian as a mere depiction of faith that heals only by intense effort and that spirituality wins over materialism following a restless battle.

The article further described the film as “supremely well-fashioned” nevertheless it lacks warmth; it manages to affect viewers with superior strength of will and thoughtful purpose. The sequence of events within the movie is said to hold viewers till the very end, according to The Guardian, as the components of the movie are immense and deep and puts Tarkovsky at a superior competition level that young directors seek to reach.

Tarkovsky died on 1986 in France leaving a unique and influential array of films including 'Ivan’s Childhood', 'Solaris', 'Mirror', and 'Stalker,' among others. He has also written books such as 'Sculpting in Time' and 'Instant Light,' to name a few.
