CAIRO - 23 July 2017: Music has been one of the most popular forms of art. It reflects culture, emotions and perceptions of people. Not all the hits that were popular throughout the years are still relevant to this day as it takes a lot to produce a song that outlives its age.

Here are some songs from the 90s that are still popular today:

5) Losing My Religion by R.E.M.

The 80s rock alternative band R.E.M. were determined to take their music onto the 90s as alternative rock rose in popularity. Their song ’Losing My Religion’ is still one of the most popular hits to this day; the song has won two Grammy’s; one for Best Short Form Video and another for Best Pop Performance by Duo or Group in 1992. The music video has over 375 million views and the number continues to grow every day.



4) Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana

Remember when everyone was wearing the Nirvana shirts reviving the trend? This goes to show the popularity of the band even though they haven’t released new singles in over 20 years. Nirvana’s singles continue to shake walls and one of their most popular songs is' Smells Like Teen Spirit'; their hit song won two MTV Video Music Awards in 1992.



3) I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston is still one of the best selling musicians of all time; her voice stole the hearts of millions and touched the souls of many more. Her most famous song ’I Will Always Love You’ was actually originally recorded and written by the country singer Dolly Parton in 1974. The song gained more popularity with Houston’s stunning vocals when she covered the song in the American classic 'The Bodyguard' in 1992. The music video has almost 450 million views on YouTube.



2) Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears

Unless you live under a rock, you have DEFINETLY heard of the Pop sensation Britney Spears. Spears shocked the world with her comeback single ’Hit Me Baby One More Time.’ The album ’Baby One More Time’ featuring the hit single is the best selling album by a teenager at that time. The music video has well over 275 million views.



1) Say My Name by Destiny’s Child

Pre-I woke up like this and Single ladies, Beyonce was a part of the girl R&B group Destiny’s Child as a lead vocalist. Almost all their songs were hits in the 90s and early 2000s and one of their signature songs is ‘Say My Name;’ the track was released in 1999 and won several awards. In 2000, the song showed great success when it won MTV’s Video Music Award for Best R&B Video and in the following year, the song received two Grammy’s for Best R&B Performance by Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song.
