CAIRO – 12 May 2022: The ancient Aztec civilization belongs to a tribe of Amerindians speaking the Nahuatl language. They invaded the Valley of Mexico in the 12th century AD.

The name Azteca is derived from Aztlan, meaning land, and sources indicate that it is located somewhere northwest of the Valley of Mexico. The Aztecs were advanced in irrigation and drainage of swamps, and were famous for the establishment of artificial islands in lakes.

This civilization also contains some kind of ancient writing, famous pyramids and temples, and was known for sacrificial rites.

The expansion of modern European countries led to the abrupt end of the Aztec civilization. Within a few years, this ruling power in Central America fell completely under the rule of the Spanish Empire. However, European invaders brought to light many unique aspects of this civilization, and human sacrifice was one of them.

The Spanish conquistadors were stunned by the ferocity and extent of Aztec violence and mass human sacrifice. For most Mesoamerican cultures, this was a daily occurrence, and for some it was a necessity.

It can be said that the Valley of Mexico was the focal point of the Mesoamerican region, and thus the homeland of the Aztecs, and sacrifice was crucial to the Aztecs. In many ways, they centered their daily activities, religious beliefs, and the well-being of their masses all around sacrifices. The theme of sacrifice is closely woven into every aspect of their culture, starting with their gods and myths.

Among the most prominent beliefs of the ancient Aztec civilization is that divine heavenly events had a great impact on unborn children. They were particularly afraid of the effects that a solar eclipse might have on the fetus.

The source of this belief was an astrological goddess who was usually peaceful, but turns into a terrifying monster when the sun disappears during an eclipse. It was believed that women allowed to watch the eclipse would be harmed by the goddess, who would turn their children into monsters like her.
