CAIRO – 3 May 2022: May 3 is the conscience that reminds governments of the need to fulfill their commitment to press freedom. It gives media workers the opportunity to dwell on issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

We should not forget that World Press Freedom Day is also an opportunity to stand by and support the stifled media, deprived of their right to press freedom.

This day is also an opportunity to commemorate those journalists who gave their lives in pursuit of the truth.

From May 2 to May 5, UNESCO and the Republic of Uruguay will host the annual World Press Freedom Day Global Conference, held in a hybrid format in Punta Del Este, Uruguay. The conference bears the slogan “Journalism Under Digital Siege”.

The conference will discuss the impact of the digital age on freedom of expression, safety of journalists, access to information and the issue of privacy.

World Press Freedom Day 2022 will bring together policy makers, journalists, media representatives, activists, cybersecurity officials and legal experts, in order to examine these issues and come up with concrete solutions that would confront the threats posed by the increasing censorship imposed on press freedom and privacy.
