CAIRO – 13 July 2017: Khalid El-Enany, Minister of Antiquities, attended the opening sessions of new permanent committees for Ancient Egyptian and Islamic and Coptic Antiquities on Tuesday. The group was recently formed, according to a released statement by the ministry.

The newly formed permanent committee aims to include archaeologists, Egyptian university professors, scientists from different specialties and engineers from a diverse field. Those fields will include laser technology, engineering, atomic science, geophysics and geology, according to Mohammad Ismail, director general of the committees.

During the opening meeting, the minister showed gratitude to all former members for their efforts. These two committees have a great effect on historic actions to protect antiquities. He also highlighted that these committees should focus on files related to national projects under the supervision of the Ministry of Antiquities.

In 1881, Khedive Tawfiq constituted a committee for the Conservation of the Monuments of Arab Art for the preservation of Islamic and Coptic monuments in Egypt. However, this committee was dissolved in 1961. It passed its responsibilities to the Permanent Committee for Islamic and Coptic Monuments, under the Egyptian Antiquities Organization. Today, this committee is known as the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The Supreme Council of Antiquities was a department within the Ministry of Culture in 1996; however, it became an independent ministry, better known as the Ministry of the State for Antiquities, in 2011.
