1146 - Bernard de Clairvaux gives his famous speech in one of the fields of Vézelay, inciting the Second Crusade, in the presence of King Louis VII of France.

1492 - Queen Isabella I of Spain issues the Alhambra decree, which stipulates that all her 150,000 Muslim and Jewish subjects convert to Christianity or leave Spain permanently.

1889 - The official opening of the Eiffel Tower.

1909 - Construction of the famous Titanic begins.

1994 - Nature publishes photographs of the first complete skull of Australopithecus afarensis.

2020 - The painting “Spring Garden”, by the world painter Van Gogh, was stolen on his birthday from the Singer Laren Museum in Laren in the northern Netherlands.
