CAIRO – 21 March 2022: The Egyptian Association of Alumni of Russian and Soviet Universities, in cooperation with the Russian Cultural Center in Cairo, is organizing the “Ramadan Lantern” workshop on March 23 at 7 p.m., in the Exhibition Hall at the center’s headquarters in Dokki.

It is worth noting that the craft of making lanterns was known to Egyptians about 1,000 years ago. Its industry has been passed down through generations.

There are several accounts about the beginnings of the appearance of the lantern in Egypt, although the earliest story dates back to 973 AD, when Jawhar al-Siqilli ordered the crowd of Egyptians to receive the Fatimid Caliph al-Muizz Li-Din Allah in a festive procession. As usual, people went out at night with lit torches in a majestic procession which pleased the Caliph, who decided to convey the idea of luminous lanterns to all the peoples under his rule.

Thus, the lantern remains an Egyptian folklore that moved from Egypt to the Islamic world.
