CAIRO - 11 July 2017: Arabic folk musician Sayed Rekabi to perform with his ensemble Jaafra music and songs at the Egyptian Center for Culture and Arts- Makan on Tuesday.

Among the Arabic folklore music performers, Rekabi is known for performing tradition music of the Egyptian community residing in Upper Egypt Aswan. Born in Jaafra Village in Aswan Governorate, Rekabi learned the Jaafra tradition from music instructors El- Leithi and Abu El- Amen, who are known for teaching special poetry such as Nameem.

In this genre, two poet-singers compete as a duet with each reciting Nameem traditional poetic lines and improvising. Rekabi and his ensemble perform accompanied by Oudh and a doff, which is a small frame drum. “Nameem’s rhythms are compared to the rhythmic effect of Rap and Hip hop music,” according to the event’s official Facebook page.

The referee in this competition is the audience of listeners.
