CAIRO – 28 October 2021: The Embassy of Brazil in Cairo, in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, is holding a photo exhibition under the title “Back to Egypt – A Brazilian Collection of Photographs”.

The exhibition includes a number of photographs of Egypt in the nineteenth century, in addition to a group of photos of the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II, who ruled Brazil from 1831 to 1889 and was the first head of state from the Americas to visit Egypt. The first time was in 1871 and again in 1876.

The exhibition will be held from November 2 to November 30 at Gezira Art Center in Zamalek.

The year 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the first visit of Emperor Dom Pedro II to Egypt.

During his travels he collected more than 500 photographs of Egypt, which are part of a collection of more than 20,000 photographs preserved by the National Library Foundation in Rio de Janeiro.

It was recognized as the Memory of the World Record by UNESCO, and during his travels inside Egypt, from Alexandria to Abu Simbel and Wadi Halfa (present-day Sudan), the Brazilian emperor kept diaries in which he recorded everything he experienced.

These photographs, which were recently recognized by UNESCO, will be part of the exhibition, along with more than 90 high-resolution prints of original images that reflect ancient Egyptian sites, landscapes, rural and urban areas, and people in the 19th century.
