680 - The Battle of Karbala takes place between Imam Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib, his family and companions, and the army of Caliph Yazid bin Muawiyah.

 

 

 

1260 - The Mamluk leader Sultan Seif al-Din Qutuz is killed, and al-Zahir Baybars takes over after him.

 

 

 

1934 - Mahatma Gandhi withdraws from the Indian National Congress.

 

 

 

1945 - More than 26 countries join the United Nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United States, China, Syria and Lebanon.
