CAIRO – 5 July 2021: At its last meeting in Rabat, Morocco, the Heritage Committee of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) approved the registration of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the city of Shali in Siwa Oasis and the Baron Palace in Heliopolis, on its heritage list.

This came after Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has submitted integrated files that shed light on the archaeological and artistic importance of these sites, as well as their architectural elements. The ministry has also presented reports on the state of the sites' preservation.

This was stated by Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri, who stressed that the registration of these sites comes within the strategy of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to highlight priority archaeological sites and register them on the international heritage lists to better introduce them to tourists.

According to Waziri, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir was previously registered on the preliminary list of UNESCO last February.

On a similar note, the comprehensive restoration operations that were implemented in Shali and the Baron Palace, and their recent opening for visits, contributed to their inclusion on ISESCO’s list, which also includes the Red Monastery in Sohag and the Nilometer in Al-Rawdah, in addition to the city of Al-Qasr and Al-Bajwat cemetery in the New Valley Governorate, which are registered on the organization's preliminary list.
