Important world events: 

 

 

1876 - The establishment of a debt fund in Egypt, after Khedive Ismail was unable to pay the installments of his country's debts owed to European banks.

 

 

 

1935 - The inauguration of the American Empire State skyscraper in New York City. Having 102 floors, it was the tallest building in the world at the time.

 

 

 

1953 - King Hussein is appointed king of Jordan, to formally take over King Talal’s place, who abdicated the throne on August 11, 1952 due to illness.

 

 

 

2011 - US President Barack Obama announces that his country has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, in a military operation near Islamabad.
