Bow of sunken 18th century ship found in Egypt’s Red Sea

CAIRO – 11 April 2021: Under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the archaeological mission of the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, succeeded in uncovering the bow of the sunken ship on Saadana Island in the Red Sea, parts of which had been found in 1994.

 

 

Head of the Central Department of Underwater Antiquities at the Supreme Council of Antiquities Ihab Fahmy explained that the mission also found the central part of the ship and hundreds of artifacts that were part of the ship's cargo.  

 

 

He pointed out that the ship had been found during excavations in 1994 by the mission of the US Naval Archeology Center.

According to Fahmy, the archaeological mission of the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, resumed its work at the site in 2017, with the aim of uncovering the remainder of the ship’s hull and documenting it using photogrammetric technology, as well as making an accurate three-dimensional model of the ship, studying its design and construction technology and preserving the artifacts that have been discovered.
