CAIRO – 29 June 2017: The Ministry of Interior launched an inspection campaign on all public transportation terminals, especially those for microbuses, to foil any attempts to exaggerate fee increases. The step follows the decision issued earlier on Thursday to increase fuel prices within a plan of removing energy subsidies.

Transportation fares will increase by no more than 10 percent, Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) head Abu Bakr el-Gendy announced.

The increase is calculated based on studies conducted in different governorates, Gendy said in a press conference.

Giza Governor Mohamed Kamal el-Dally stated to the press in a meeting with officials Thursday that the governorate authorities will put signboards announcing the fees of each route. Also, public transportation vehicles must have stickers announcing the route and fees.

The new fees for internal routes are between LE 25-75 ($1.3-4), while they are between LE 3-5 for external routes determined by each route’s distance. The increase is between 7-22 percent.

Meanwhile, there has been no price increase in train fares, head of the Railway Authority Medhat Shousha said.
