60% of population not to be affected by water price hikes

CAIRO – 21 May 2017: About 60 percent of people will not be affected by the Holding Company for Water and Waster Water's decision to impose a new increase in the price of water from next July, said Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development, Mostafa Madbouly in a Sunday statement.

Medbouly said during a meeting of the Housing Committee in the House of Representatives that the drinking water and sanitation company must bear the costs of the operation, replacement and renewal of stations across the country.

On Saturday, the new increase in water tariffs approved by the Cabinet; it has become the first slide, starting from zero to 10 cubic meters, is accounted for to 45 pts per cubic meter instead of 30 pts; the second slide, starts from 11 to 20 cubic meters became 120 pts, rather than 70 pts; and the third tranche starts from 21 to 30 cubic meters became 165 pts instead of 120 pts.
