CAIRO – 22 November 2017: The Ministry of Electricity will sign a contract with Shuaa-Arabian Scientific Information Company next week to provide meter reading services for customers, the ministry announced.

First undersecretary of the Electricity Ministry Sabah Meshaly said in a televised interview on DMC channel that trial operations will start next week in North and South Cairo electricity distribution companies.

Meshaly also noted that the smart meters project will minimize human error in meter reading and give more precise information.

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is planning to convert all 30 million electricity meters of the consumers to smart meters in the next 10 years with a LE 60 billion budget.

Divided on phases, the ministry is aiming to install four million smart meters a year until 2027.

"The Ministry of Electricity will start installing smart meters in households, during the experimental phase, in one year," spokesperson of the Ministry of Electriciry Ayman Hamza previously announced.
