CAIRO - 1 October 2017: The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has agreed to grant $31.4 million to the Environment Ministry for establishing a project to improve the climate change adaptation in the North Coast and Delta in Egypt.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said the project will be established by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) after the approval of GCF board of directors in its 18th meeting taking place in Egypt.

The project aims to set up protection systems with 69 km long for the low-level lands in the Nile Delta's coasts, which are threatened to be sunken due to the rise of sea level associated with the phenomenon of climate change.

Egypt obtained the grant for the first time from the GCF, in addition to two power projects for the Electricity Ministry. Thus, Egypt obtained 20 percent of the total of what had been allocated by the GCF for the developing countries.
