Khalda begins 40M cubic feet per day gas production from Western Desert well

CAIRO – 22 July 2026: Khalda Petroleum Company has brought a new gas well in Egypt’s Western Desert into production, delivering 40 million cubic feet of gas per day, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The production start follows Khalda’s latest gas discovery at the deep Watda exploratory well. Khalda Petroleum is a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and global energy company Apache.

The well was drilled to a depth of 15,000 feet, while electric logging results confirmed the presence of gas-bearing geological formations.

Production tests carried out immediately after drilling was completed recorded an output of 40 million cubic feet per day, supporting Egypt’s efforts to increase domestic gas production.

Khalda started production and gas injection from the Watda well on Tuesday, July 21. The well is scheduled to be fully connected to the national gas grid before the end of July.

To accelerate the development of the discovery, the company constructed a new 10-kilometre production pipeline at a cost of $2.3 million. The pipeline connects the well to existing infrastructure and enables the rapid transportation of the newly produced gas.

The project is expected to strengthen Egypt’s gas supply system and reflects the results of intensified exploration and development activities in the Western Desert.
