Egypt begins drafting post-IMF national economic program

CAIRO - 21 July 2026: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting to outline an implementation plan for President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to develop a national economic program for the period following the completion of Egypt’s reform program with the International Monetary Fund.

Madbouly said the meeting was part of a series of discussions aimed at translating the president’s directives into clear, practical and measurable policies.

The proposed program is expected to set the framework for a new phase of economic development, reflecting Egypt’s national priorities and long-term objectives.

A joint working group comprising representatives from the government, the Central Bank of Egypt and other relevant authorities is preparing the program to ensure coordination between fiscal, monetary and broader economic policies.

Once finalized, the program will be submitted to President El-Sisi before its official announcement.

Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsani said the meeting reviewed the program’s main priorities, targets and policy framework, while emphasizing the importance of close cooperation between the government and the Central Bank.

Officials also examined the experiences of countries that previously completed IMF-backed reform programs, focusing on the policies they adopted during the post-program period.

These international examples will help Egypt develop a national framework based on global best practices while taking into account the structure of the Egyptian economy and the country’s development priorities.

The program will build on the National Structural Reform Program, the National Narrative for Comprehensive Development and Egypt Vision 2030.

Madbouly directed officials to present the program in clear and accessible language that can be understood by the public while still meeting the needs of economic experts and institutions.

He also stressed that it should include defined policy guidelines, measurable targets and objective mechanisms for monitoring implementation and assessing performance.

The government plans to present the draft program for public dialogue with experts and specialists, allowing their recommendations to be considered before the final version is officially announced.
