CAIRO – 14 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat to follow up on Egypt’s electricity grid development and renewable energy expansion plans.

Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said the meeting reviewed the progress of the second phase of projects designed to strengthen the national electricity grid. The Minister of Electricity noted that this phase includes around 105 projects, while also presenting plans to connect solar and wind energy projects to the grid by 2027.

El-Sisi underlined the importance of improving electricity supply quality, raising the efficiency of traditional fuel use, and maintaining the stability of the national grid. He also stressed the need to adhere to project implementation timelines and grid-connection schedules, in support of Egypt’s energy transition and sustainable development goals.

The meeting also addressed plans to implement solar energy projects and battery energy storage systems, as Egypt aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 45 percent within the next two years. The plan includes expanding both grid-connected and standalone energy storage stations.

Esmat reviewed the operation of the first phase of the Obelisk Solar Power Plant, which has a capacity of 500 megawatts, along with a grid-connected energy storage station with a capacity of 200 megawatt-hours. Both projects were connected to the grid at the beginning of this year.

He also reviewed progress on the second phase of the plant, which has a capacity of 500 megawatts and is scheduled to be connected to the grid in the coming weeks, as part of Egypt’s plan to add new solar and wind power capacities during the current summer.

El-Sisi called for regular monitoring and review of renewable energy projects, whether already operating or still under implementation. He also directed continued cooperation with all relevant state institutions and authorities, in partnership with local and foreign private sector companies carrying out projects under Egypt’s national energy strategy.

The President also highlighted the importance of implementing solar, wind, and energy storage projects in local currency, while stressing the need to expand energy storage systems to maximize the value of renewable energy and support grid stability.

The meeting also reviewed the latest developments in the Energy Valley project, described as one of the world’s largest integrated clean energy projects. The project includes 1.7 gigawatts AC of photovoltaic solar power generation in Minya Governorate, supported by battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours distributed across Minya, Qena, and Alexandria.

El-Sisi emphasized that these projects are key to expanding renewable energy use, reducing carbon emissions, and diversifying Egypt’s energy sources. He also stressed that localizing renewable energy-related industries is a core pillar for strengthening energy security and advancing Egypt’s green transition.
