Al Nowais, Gotion, China Energy, and CEIG have signed agreements to develop two standalone battery energy storage projects with a total capacity of 1,500 MWh in Zafarana and Benban.
The agreements also include plans to establish a factory for the production of battery energy storage systems, with an annual capacity of 3,000 MWh.
The contracts cover engineering, procurement, and construction works for the Horus standalone battery storage project, with a capacity of 500 MWh in Zafarana, and the Nefertiti standalone battery storage project, with a capacity of 1,000 MWh in Benban.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said battery storage systems were introduced last year for the first time in the history of Egypt’s national electricity grid.
He added that expanding the use of solar and wind energy under Egypt’s national energy strategy requires greater reliance on storage solutions to support grid stability and ensure sustainable power supply.
Esmat also said Egypt has set clear implementation timelines to raise battery energy storage capacity to 14,320 MWh by 2028.
