CAIRO – 18 May 2026: Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is moving to support the wider use of solar panels across all sectors, including residential use, according to ministry spokesperson Mansour Abdel Ghany.
Abdel Ghany said Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has directed the ministry to provide all forms of support to citizens to encourage the installation of solar panels on rooftops and other locations.
In exclusive statements to Youm7, Abdel Ghany said one of the main measures being taken to expand the use of renewable energy is exempting citizens from any requirements for installing solar panels on residential rooftops or similar sites.
He explained that coordination with electricity distribution companies is only required if the solar panels are connected to the national electricity grid through a net metering device, allowing users to benefit from the net metering system.
Abdel Ghany also said a new company is being established through cooperation between the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and the Arab Organization for Industrialization to manufacture and produce solar panels locally at a lower cost instead of importing them.
He added that the move aims to encourage more citizens to set up solar power stations and support Egypt’s wider shift toward renewable energy.
