CAIRO - 14 May 2026: Egypt is stepping up efforts to strengthen its national electricity grid and accelerate renewable energy integration ahead of an expected 7 percent increase in power demand during summer 2026.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat directed electricity production, transmission, and distribution companies nationwide to raise preparedness levels to secure grid stability, maintain uninterrupted supply, and manage peak summer consumption.
During a meeting with senior electricity sector officials and utility executives, Esmat stressed that upgrading and modernizing the national grid must remain an ongoing priority to support rising electricity demand and accommodate the rapid expansion of renewable energy projects.
The minister highlighted Egypt’s target to raise the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 45 percent by 2028, noting that implementation timelines for renewable projects are being accelerated to meet that goal.
The meeting reviewed emergency preparedness measures, operational efficiency plans, and maintenance programs ahead of the summer season, particularly after the grid successfully handled record consumption levels last year.
Officials also discussed strengthening transformer stations and transmission infrastructure to integrate additional renewable energy capacity, while improving fuel efficiency and prioritizing lower-consumption power plants.
The discussions further covered coordination with the National Energy Control Center, preventive maintenance systems, spare-parts inventories, and contingency plans aimed at reducing outages and ensuring the sustainability of electricity services across the country.
