Egypt’s annual inflation edges down to 13.4% in April

CAIRO - 6 May 2026:  The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics announced on Wednesday that Egypt’s nationwide consumer price index reached 287.9 points in April 2026, recording a monthly inflation rate of 1.2 percent compared to March.

According to the agency, annual inflation across the country eased slightly to 13.4 percent in April 2026, down from 13.5 percent in the previous month.

CAPMAS attributed the monthly increase mainly to higher prices across several food and consumer categories. Prices of cereals and bread rose by 1.4 percent, fish and seafood by 1.8 percent, oils and fats by 1.2 percent, fruits by 3.8 percent, and vegetables by 5.1 percent.

Other food and beverage categories also recorded increases, including sugar and sugary products, which rose by 0.7 percent, coffee, tea, and cocoa by 0.6 percent, mineral water, soft drinks, and natural juices by 0.2 percent, while tobacco prices increased by 0.5 percent.

The report also highlighted rising prices across several non-food categories. Fabrics increased by 1.7 percent, ready-made garments by 2.1 percent, clothing cleaning, repair, and rental services by 2.6 percent, and footwear by 1.7 percent.

Housing-related expenses continued to rise as well, with actual housing rents increasing by 5.4 percent, maintenance and repair services by 2.6 percent, and electricity, gas, and other fuel materials by 2.5 percent.

Household goods and furnishings also saw price hikes, including household furniture by 1.6 percent, home appliances by 2.7 percent, glassware and household utensils by 2.2 percent, home and garden tools by 3 percent, and household maintenance products and services by 2.7 percent.

Healthcare and transportation costs also moved higher during the month. Hospital services rose by 3.5 percent, vehicle purchases by 2.2 percent, private transportation expenses by 0.6 percent, and transportation services by 5.1 percent.

Meanwhile, some categories recorded declines in April, including meat and poultry prices, which fell by 6.4 percent, dairy, cheese, and eggs by 0.3 percent, and personal belongings by 0.1 percent.
