CAIRO - 3 May 2026: Egypt has raised natural gas prices for energy-intensive industries, introducing a new pricing structure effective May 1 as part of a broader overhaul of energy pricing for the industrial sector.

Under a government decision published in the Official Gazette, gas prices will vary by sector, with a minimum charge of $6.5 per million British thermal units (mmBtu).

The cement industry will face the steepest increase, with prices rising to $14 per mmBtu from $12 previously. Meanwhile, prices for steel, petrochemicals, and non-nitrogen fertilizer producers have been set at $7.75 per mmBTu, up from $5.75.

For other industrial activities, gas prices have been fixed at $6.75 per mmBtu.

The decision excludes companies that purchase gas under pre-existing contracts linked to pricing formulas, which will remain in effect.

It also grants the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources the authority to determine gas pricing for petrochemical feedstock, including ethane and propane mixtures, in line with the newly approved mechanism.

The price adjustments come as Egypt grapples with a sharp increase in its gas import costs following geopolitical tensions earlier this year. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said in March that the country’s monthly import bill had surged to approximately $1.65 billion, compared with about $560 million previously, citing higher global energy prices.
