CAIRO - 29 April 2026: Egypt’s unemployment rate declined to 6.3 percent of the total labor force in 2025, compared with 6.6 percent in 2024, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The improvement comes amid a notable increase in labor supply, suggesting the market absorbed a large share of new entrants despite ongoing structural challenges.
The labor force grew by 6.6 percent year-on-year, reaching approximately 34.2 million individuals in 2025, up from 32.04 million in the previous year.
At the same time, the number of unemployed rose slightly to 2.136 million, compared with 2.113 million in 2024, marking an increase of about 23,000 individuals, or 1.1 percent.
Urban labor markets showed some strain, with unemployment rising to 9.8 percent in 2025 from 9.6 percent a year earlier. In contrast, rural areas recorded a sharper improvement, with unemployment falling to 3.5 percent from 4.2 percent.
Youth unemployment continued to trend downward. Among individuals aged 15 to 29, the jobless rate declined to 13.2 percent, down by 1.7 percentage points compared with 2024. However, disparities remain pronounced, as unemployment among young males stood at 8.1 percent, while the rate among young females reached 33.8 percent.
The data also pointed to progress among educated youth. Unemployment among individuals aged 15 to 29 with intermediate, above-intermediate, university, or higher qualifications dropped to 16.8 percent in 2025, compared with 18.7 percent in 2024.
