CAIRO - 28 April 2026: President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has called for accelerating construction on Cairo’s Metro Line 4, underscoring the project’s role in easing congestion and supporting sustainable urban mobility.

The directive came during an inspection tour of the Pyramids Station site in Giza, part of the first phase of the new metro line currently under development.

During the visit, the president reviewed tunneling progress and received a briefing from officials at the National Authority for Tunnels on the project’s timeline and execution. The first phase, including Pyramids Station, is expected to be completed and operational in the first half of 2028.

Metro Line 4 is a major addition to Cairo’s public transport infrastructure, designed to connect key urban centers such as 6th of October City and New Cairo with the existing metro network. The route will pass through several densely populated districts, including Haram, Faisal, Omraneya, Nasr City, and areas surrounding Al-Azhar University.

Officials estimate the line will transport up to 2 million passengers per day, significantly reducing pressure on Cairo’s road network. The project is also set to integrate with the 6th of October Monorail, creating a more connected and efficient transit system across Greater Cairo.

As part of the tour, Sisi activated a tunnel boring machine to mark the continuation of excavation works, following the completion of a key tunnel segment linking Hadayek Al Ashgar and Pyramids stations.

The president emphasized the need for strict adherence to project timelines, as well as maintaining high standards of construction quality and operational safety. He also reiterated the strategic importance of expanding environmentally friendly mass transit options to accommodate Egypt’s growing urban population and reduce carbon emissions.

The Cairo Metro expansion is part of a broader government push to modernize infrastructure and improve mobility in one of the region’s most densely populated capitals.
