CAIRO - 23 April 2026: Egypt has shipped its first poultry consignment to Qatar in nearly two decades, as producers move to tap export markets to absorb surplus production, according to the General Union of Poultry Producers.
The shipment, totaling 300 tonnes across 10 containers, marks Egypt’s return to poultry exports after a suspension that lasted nearly 20 years following the avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak.
The move comes as the domestic poultry sector records production levels exceeding local demand, prompting efforts to stabilize prices and prevent market imbalances.
“The sector is witnessing a surplus this year, which has driven us to expand exports to maintain market stability,” said Mahmoud El-Anany, head of the union.
He added that talks are ongoing with companies in Kuwait to open additional export channels, while Egyptian producers have also proposed supplying table eggs to Qatar as part of a broader export expansion plan.
Egypt had resumed exports of table eggs to Gulf markets, including the UAE, around three years ago, signaling a gradual recovery in the sector’s external trade.
Separately, El-Anany noted that five poultry companies have agreed with state authorities to supply 1,050 tonnes of frozen poultry, after meeting all regulatory and technical requirements, in a move aimed at reducing import reliance and managing excess supply in the local market.
