CAIRO – 20 April 2026: Egypt has decided to delay the implementation of 20 road projects as part of a broader government strategy aimed at reducing petroleum consumption and lowering the country’s import bill, Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir said during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
Madbouly underscored that the government is actively tracking projects that have been postponed or slowed under the rationalization plan, which is designed to optimize fuel usage and safeguard national energy security.
El Wazir noted that the projects selected for postponement were chosen based on specific criteria, ensuring that initiatives nearing completion or carrying strategic significance will proceed without disruption.
Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Randa El-Menshawy affirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the postponement measures as part of the government’s wider efforts to control spending and reduce imports in light of persistent global economic challenges.
Meanwhile, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said the ministry remains focused on securing fuel supplies for key productive sectors and meeting citizens’ needs, while rolling out a set of consumption-rationalization measures to mitigate the impact of regional tensions.
He added that these actions are being closely monitored to help limit dependence on imports and relieve pressure on the state budget.
Madbouly concluded the meeting by calling for the establishment of a permanent coordination framework among relevant ministries to ensure ongoing oversight of the rationalization plan, stressing that the measures aim to reprioritize government spending without affecting essential services or the country’s long-term development trajectory.
