CAIRO - 1 February 2026: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced on Sunday the official launch of a new contactless payment service, allowing merchants to accept card payments through smartphones and tablets using Soft POS applications.

The service turns mobile devices into secure payment acceptance points, enabling payments with contactless cards.

Merchants install the Soft POS app on their devices, with card PINs entered directly on the screen in a fully secure and internationally certified process.

Governor Hassan Abdalla said the move is part of the Bank’s broader strategy to expand digital payment infrastructure, facilitate easier financial transactions for citizens and businesses, and promote financial inclusion across Egypt.

By eliminating the need for traditional POS machines, the service helps merchants and payment providers cut costs while enabling faster, safer, and more flexible payments.

It also opens the door for small and micro businesses to join the digital payments ecosystem.

The CBE had piloted the service in previous years with a transaction cap of EGP 600.

The official launch now provides a full-scale solution in line with global digital payment trends, offering an accessible and cost-effective alternative for merchants nationwide.
