CAIRO - 29 January 2026: Egypt inaugurated the largest automated sorting center in the Middle East on Wednesday, marking a new expansion in the country’s logistics infrastructure amid continued growth in e-commerce activity.

The facility, launched with investments of $5 million, has the capacity to sort 11,000 shipments per hour and up to 250,000 shipments per day.

The project aims to support delivery volumes of around 80 million shipments in 2026, according to an official statement.

Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat attended the opening, alongside representatives from the logistics sector and Egypt’s start-up community.

Al-Mashat said the expansion reflects rising demand in Egypt’s logistics and e-commerce markets, citing the role of technology and innovation in improving service efficiency and supporting sectoral growth. She added that Egypt’s large domestic market and population provide a strong base for continued expansion.

The minister said the government is working to provide incentives and facilitation measures to support start-ups, describing entrepreneurship as an increasingly important contributor to economic growth, employment creation, and productivity enhancement. She noted that several new measures to support the sector are expected to be announced following work by the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship.

Al-Mashat also pointed to cooperation between Egyptian start-ups involved in the project, describing such collaboration as an indicator of growing integration and competitiveness within the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

She referred to discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos on the importance of technology and artificial intelligence, noting that increased adoption of modern technologies by start-ups is expected to support business expansion and sectoral development.

According to the statement, entrepreneurship and innovation form part of Egypt’s broader development framework through 2030, with a focus on enhancing competitiveness and supporting sustainable economic growth.
