CAIRO – 12 August 2025: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has revised its regulations on the use of credit cards outside the country, removing a key documentation requirement for travelers while keeping monitoring measures in place.

In a notification sent to banks on Tuesday, the CBE announced the cancellation of Clause No. (2) of its October 29, 2023, circular, later amended on February 11, 2024. The clause had obligated customers using their cards abroad to submit proof of travel, such as passport entry and exit stamps within 90 days of approval, or other documents verifying extended stays overseas.

The CBE emphasized that banks are still authorized to track transactions to confirm they are conducted outside Egypt. Customers who fail to provide required evidence when requested will be subject to the measures outlined in Clause No. (3) of the 2023 circular, as amended in 2024.

According to the central bank, the amendment is part of its ongoing review of cross-border payment activity, aiming to streamline services for travelers while preserving strict oversight of card usage abroad.
