Egypt-AU Trade Hits $9.8 Billion in 2024 Amid Strengthening Economic Ties

CAIRO – 13 July 2025: The total trade volume between Egypt and African Union (AU) member states reached $9.8 billion in 2024, up from $9.2 billion in 2023, reflecting a 6.5 percent increase, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Egypt’s exports to AU countries amounted to $7.7 billion in 2024, rising from $7.4 billion in 2023, which represents a 4.7 percent growth.

Libya emerged as the leading importer of Egyptian goods, with a total of $2 billion in imports. It was followed by Morocco with $1 billion, Algeria with $996 million, Sudan at $866.2 million, Tunisia at $372 million, and Kenya at $307 million. Other top destinations included Côte d’Ivoire ($251 million), Ghana ($239 million), Nigeria ($151 million), and Madagascar ($132 million).

On the import side, Egypt received $2.1 billion worth of goods from AU countries in 2024, up from $1.8 billion in 2023, marking a 14.5 percent increase.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo led the list of African exporters to Egypt with $661.9 million, followed by Sudan ($292.4 million), Kenya ($260.1 million), Nigeria ($165.5 million), and South Africa ($154.3 million). Additional key suppliers included Zambia ($64 million), Libya ($56.4 million), and Tunisia ($49.9 million).

In terms of investment, African Union countries invested $831.2 million in Egypt during the 2023/2024 fiscal year, a sharp decline from $1.6 billion the previous year. Meanwhile, Egyptian investments in AU countries slightly decreased to $499.1 million, compared to $504.6 million in 2022/2023.

The number of Egyptians living in AU countries was estimated at 59,100 by the end of 2023, based on figures from Egyptian embassies.

These developments coincide with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, where he is attending the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Summit of the African Union. President El-Sisi is participating in his capacity as Chair of the North Africa Regional Mechanism and the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee.

At the summit, the President is expected to highlight Egypt’s contributions to advancing both mechanisms, particularly in promoting peace, security, and their integration with development goals across the African continent.
