CAIRO - 18 July 2017: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi discussed plans on Tuesday with Chinese companies to develop an electric tram system. The system will connect El Salam City and the New Administrative Capital to Greater Cairo.

The new tram will be passing by the 10th of Ramadan City, according to a statement by the president. Attendees in the meeting and the Transportation Minister Hesham Arafat also discussed the construction phases.

The project will span over 66 kilometers and include 11 stations, whereas construction tenders will be assigned to Egyptian contractors. The tram will also be connected to the third line of the underground metro reaching El Salam City. The tram will be connecting cities such as Obour, Sherouk, Badr, and 10th Ramadan City to greater Cairo.

The tram is expected to be finalized within two years. It will include regular maintenance and trained workers who will be able to preserve the quality of transportation service provided to citizens.

This comes as part of the Transportation Ministry’s plan to develop railway networks across the entire country. The project will reduce congestion and save energy, according to presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef.
