CAIRO – 6 March 2023: Egypt’s Parliament member (PM) Amal AbdElhamid submitted Monday a law proposal to ban the import of pitbull dogs.

This law proposal comes following a brutal attack by a pitbull dog on a neighboring resident.

The resident is currently in a coma, after undergoing an operation to repair the muscle damage caused by the dog.

The incident sparked an outrage among Egyptians, who called for stricter regulations on pet ownership.

In her proposal, AbdElhamid mentions past incidents of pitbull attacks in Egypt, emphasizing that this incident will not be the last unless the authorities step in and criminalize pitbull ownership in Egypt.

The proposal showcases different regulations imposed on pitbull dogs' ownership in different countries, such as the UK, Australia, France, Switzerland, Brazil and Russia, ranging from banning to restriction.

According to Head of Egypt's Veterinarians' Syndicate, Khaled Selim, Egypt records 500 thousand cases of dog attacks yearly.

“Killing dogs isn’t an effective solution to eliminate or reduce attacks, better approaches such as vaccinations and castration can be used to decrease reproduction rates” he added.

Moreover, Selim emphasized that any animal attack should be handled first and foremost by a medical professional.
