Unemployment rate in Egypt rises to 7.4% during Q3 of 2022

CAIRO - 15 November 2022: Egypt’s unemployment rate rose to 7.4 percent of the total labor force during the third quarter (Q3) of 2022, compared to 7.2 percent in the second quarter (Q2) of the same year, according to the state-statistic body.
 
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced in a statement Tuesday that the estimated size of the labor force recorded 30.264 million individuals, compared to 29.985 million individuals during the previous quarter, with an increase of 0.9 percent. 
 
The CAPMAS attributed this increase to the increase in the number of workers by 180,000 workers during the current quarter compared to the previous quarter, and the increase of the unemployed by 99,000 unemployed persons, which led to an increase in the labor force by 279,000 individuals.
 
The urban labor force amounted to 13.400 million people, while it reached 16.864 million in rural areas, according to the CAPMAS’s statement.
 
As for the gender level, the size of the labor force amounted to 25.321 million individuals for males, while it reached 4.943 million individuals for females.
 
The number of unemployed reached 2.250 million, or 7.4 percent of the total labor force (1.307 million males and 943 thousand females), compared to 2.151 million unemployed in the second quarter of 2022, marking an increase of 99 thousand unemployed, or 4.6 percent, and an increase of 39 thousand unemployed compared to the same quarter of the previous year by 1.8 percent.
 
According to the statement, the unemployment rate among males reached 5.2 percent of the total males in the labor force in the third quarter, compared to 5 percent in the previous quarter, and 5.9 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.
 
The unemployment rate among females reached 19.1 percent of the total females in the labor force, compared to 17.5 percent in the previous quarter, and 15.3 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.
 
As for the unemployment among males aged between 15 to 29 years, it reached 61.9 percent, compared to 61.3 percent in the previous quarter.
