New berths to be constructed at Alexandria Port to increase trade movement

CAIRO – 21 June 2022: The Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir accompanied an inspection tour at Alexandria Port, to follow up on the implementation rates of projects, among of them the establishment of new berths.  

A berth is a location at harbors and ports designated to receive vessels, where they are moored usually for the purposes of loading and unloading. 

The tour was attended by Major General Reda Ismail, Head of the Maritime Transport Sector, and Major General Nihad Shaheen, Head of the Alexandria Port Authority.

Aiming to increase the trade movement in the ports, new berths are currently being constructed with total lengths of 35 km and depths ranging from 15-18 meters.

The new project, bringing the total length of the berths in the seaports to 73 km, aims to receive giant ships and link the seaports with a network of dry ports and logistic centers.  

Projects’ consultants made detailed presentation of the executive position of utilities works and building, ensuring that the implementation rates go in line with the project timetable.

The Minister of Transport was also briefed on the plan to complete the dredging works for the navigation lanes and station berths, which are being carried out by the Alexandria Port Authority and the Suez Canal Authority.

The Minister of Transport continued the implementation work of the construction project of berth 85/3, which aims to increase the capacity of the port of Alexandria to keep pace with the increasing demand in the activity of general goods. The project seeks to increase the storage area to an area of ​​35,000 m2 with a length of 433 meters, and a depth of 15.5 meters, which allows ships weighing up to 70,000 tons.

The minister also inspected a project to establish a logistic area on the Nubaria Canal, which aims to increase the floor area of ​​the port of Alexandria by establishing a logistical backyard on an area of ​​273 acres connected to multimodal transportation, in order to maximize the capacity and storage spaces, activate river transport and maximize the possibilities of rail transport.

On the sidelines of his inspection tour, the minister confirmed, in press statements, that work is in full swing to develop all Egyptian ports in implementation of the political leadership’s directives to make Egypt a global center for trade and logistics.
