CAIRO - 6 January 2022:  More than 100 investors of the Solar Energy Development Association (SEDA Egypt) sent a letter to the Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker asking for abolishing customs tariffs on imports of solar panels, Al Mal newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Last December, the government announced that it would impose customs tariffs on imports of solar panels up to 5%, after these panels were completely exempted from customs duty over the past years.

Egypt enjoys solar energy more than any part in the world, said famous Egyptian scientist Dr. Farouk el-Baz in December 2021. He added that the maps show that the Western Desert and part of Libya receive the most solar energy in the entire world.

In 2018, Egypt inaugurated the Benban Solar Park, the largest solar power park in the world.

Egypt has embarked on mega solar energy production projects as part of its vision for 2030. We list some figures about the field in the past few years.

  • In two years, 126 solar power stations were established across Egypt.
  • The capacities of the solar power stations established by the government amount to 1,8 megawatts.
  • The capacities of the stations fall between five kilowatts and 500 kilowatts.
  • The economic feasibility of solar energy components and its price are very high all over the world.
