Upper Egypt’s energy control system project plays important role to achieve stable, efficient electricity distribution: JICA

CAIRO – 27 December 2021:  Japan International Cooperation Agency [JICA] said, Monday that Samalout Regional Power Control Center and upgrading Naga-Hamadi Regional Power Control Center in Upper Egypt, plays an important role to achieve stable and efficient electricity transmission and distribution.

JICA stated that the project inaugurated Monday By President Abdel Fattah al Sisi is also expected to reduce the Electricity outage durations, as well as accidents and malfunctions in the regional grid in addition to monitoring the exchange of electricity between Upper Egypt’s electricity power plants and the neighboring electricity areas.

JICA Chief Representative, OMURA Yoshifumi, shared his appreciation for the cooperation with Egypt and also emphasized that this project adds to the success stories that JICA has with the Government of Egypt.

Yoshifumi added that, the record of Japan’s cooperation in this crucial sector has realized great achievement, reform, and stability under the leadership of President Abdel Fatah El Sisi, and Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker

He also mentioned that the project plays an important role in enhancing the electricity sector in South of Egypt which comes in accordance with the recent directions of the Egyptian Government that aims at improving the standard of living of the residents in rural areas through the implementation of developmental and service projects and activities for securing a decent life to these communities.

On Monday, President Sisi witnessed the Inauguration Ceremony of the Control System Upgrading Project in Upper Egypt Region, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency – JICA - with an amount of JPY 10.7 billion equivalent to USD 96 million at Benban, Aswan Governorate.

JICA representatives expressed their pleasure for attending the Inauguration Ceremony which came in the framework of the Upper Egypt Week which was allocated by the Government of Egypt to inaugurate giant development and industrial projects in various fields including the field of electricity, in this concern, 5 prominent projects – including the JICA project were inaugurated.

The Ceremony was attended by Prime Minster Mostafa Madbouli, Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker, in addition to numerous esteemed members of the Egyptian Government and representatives of the Electricity Companies affiliated to the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

The Project plays an important role to achieve stable and efficient electricity transmission and distribution in South Egypt by upgrading the existing Upper Egypt Regional Control Centre in Naga Hamadi, which was originally constructed by Japan’s ODA in 1988, and constructing a new Middle Egypt Regional Control Centre in Samalout including interconnection with around 200 substations.

The project is also expected to reduce the Electricity outage durations, as well as accidents and malfunctions in the regional grid in addition to monitoring the exchange of electricity between Upper Egypt’s electricity power plants and the neighboring electricity areas, thereby contributing to economic development and environmental improvement of the region.

It also worth highlighting that, the project consists of three lots, the first lot is executed by Siemens in Cooperation with Sumitomo Japan, the second lot is executed by Ericsson with San Misr, and the third lot is executed by Egytech Cables Elsewedy with Giza Systems.
