Mauritanian presidential elections kick off

NOUAKCHOTT, June 22 (MENA) - Presidential elections in Mauritania kicked off on Saturday.

Large numbers of voters flocked to polling stations to elect a president from six candidates, with voting process to run until 7 p.m., according to the country's law.

The six candidates competing for Mauritania's presidency include former defense minister Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani, former prime minister Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar and a well-known MP and activist Biram Dah Abeid.

More than one and a half million people are eligible to vote in the elections.
