How Egypt’s ‘Haya Karima’ achieves unprecedented development in countryside

CAIRO - 28 August 2025: Once a region lacking basic services, the Dar El-Salam district in Sohag Governorate is now a model of integrated development, thanks to the massive national "Decent Life" initiative. This presidential project, launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has brought an unprecedented boom to every sector, including health, education, sanitation, electricity, and roads. It has even expanded to include industry and job creation, marking a historic transformation that places Dar El-Salam on the map of genuine development.

The initiative targeted most of Dar El-Salam's villages, including Mazata Sharq, Awlad Salem, Al-Nuseirat, Al-Khiam, Al-Ghabat, Naqnaq, Al-Aqariya, Awlad Yahia, Awlad Al-Sheikh, Al-Balabish, and Najou' Maazen Sharq.

Among the most notable achievements is the completion of a Citizens Services Complex in the village of Al-Ezba. This facility is one of 30 unified service centers that include a technology center, civil registry, real estate office, post office, and social solidarity services, allowing residents to complete all their transactions under one roof.

In the health sector, a modern health unit was established in Awlad Yahia, part of the Universal Health Insurance system. It includes clinics for maternity, children, the elderly, and dentistry, along with integrated laboratories, a pharmacy, and dedicated rooms for doctors and nurses. Additionally, a new, fully equipped ambulance point was activated in the village of Awlad Yahia Al-Hajir, ensuring a swift response to emergencies.

On the infrastructure front, a gigantic sanitation plant was built in the village of Najou' Maazen Sharq. Spanning 32 acres, the plant has a current capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day, with future plans to expand to 90,000 cubic meters. This project will serve approximately 450,000 people across 15 villages, ending a long history of suffering from informal sewage systems.

The "Decent Life" initiative also focused on connecting villages and boosting the local economy. A new, high-capacity bridge was built over the Farouqiya Canal, linking the east and west of the district and replacing old, dilapidated bridges. Three additional bridges were constructed to ease traffic flow and enhance safety.

Environmentally and industrially, the project included the construction of Egypt's third waste recycling plant in Najou' Maazen, a $90 million investment on a 10-acre site. With an operational capacity of 20 tons per hour, the plant includes production lines for modern-tech fertilizer and alternative fuel, making it a key industrial project for the entire governorate. An adjacent secure sanitary landfill was also built, putting an end to informal dumpsites and protecting the soil and groundwater from pollution.

In education, a new administrative building for the Dar El-Salam Educational Directorate was built at a cost of $6 million. This new facility, equipped with an advanced digital infrastructure, underscores the government's commitment to improving educational services.

Today, Dar El-Salam is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, a testament to the political will and full support of the leadership. The "Decent Life" initiative is not just a project; it's a comprehensive national plan that is changing the face of the Egyptian countryside, opening a new chapter for villages that were deprived of their most basic rights for years.
