Adam El Sharkawy.

Adam El Sharkawy.

After his highly successful role in Le’bet Newton series, Egyptian- American rising star Adam El Sharkawy competed in Ramadan’s drama marathon with the role of Sameh in 1000 Hamdela Ala El Salama. We sit down with the up-and- coming actor to chat about the comedy, his first leading role in an Egyptian movie and his plans for the future.

1-Tell us more about your role in 1000 Hamdela Ala El Salama

I play the role of Sameh, who lives in Canada with his mother Dr. Samiha (Yousra) and sister Samah (Mayan El Sayed), and decides to return to Egypt after his father’s death to claim his inheritance and find his grandmother, but they all go through a bunch of funny situations. I am happy with this role because it is a comic one. I was afraid at the beginning of taking on a comic part but director Amr Salah supported me a lot.

2-You still don’t fully master the Arabic language, how did you work on that?

I am working to enhance and improve my Arabic accent continuously, but Sameh’s role was easy for me because he is an Egyptian guy who was raised in Canada so it is expected that he is not fluent in Arabic.

3-What was it like working with Yousra and the cast?

Yousra is one of the kindest people I have ever met in my life. She is fully focused on her work and always wants to present good and different content. She has made a career of taking on almost all types of roles, but she is always keen to present new things to her fans. She takes care of us and I felt she treated me like a son. Mohamed Tharwat and Shaimaa Seif helped me a lot because they have vast experience in comic roles, for example when I am lost for words and searching for the right sentence they always help me out. Mayan and I became friends when I came to Egypt, and we worked together before on Le’bet Newton. There is a good chemistry between us. I’ve become friends with Einaba too, and he used to explain to me different things about Egypt that I never knew.

4-What is your dream role?

That’s a very difficult question, I’ve never thought before about a specific role that I want to play. I think I want to embody different roles that will add something meaningful to my rep- ertoire. But if I had to choose it would be to play Alexander The Great because he made a number of immortal achievements at a very young age. I’d also want to play famed boxer Nassem Hamed aka Prince Nassem because his life journey is both very rich and inspiring.

5-Who are the actors, actresses and directors you want to work with?

I want to work with Maged El Kidwany, Yasmine Abdelaziz , and as for the directors off the top of my head there is Kamla Abouzekry and Marwan Hamed. I’ve worked be- fore with Tamer Mohsen and Amr Salama and want to work again with both of them.

6-What are you following this Ramadan?

Mohamed Farag’s series Harb. I am super excited to watch Mona Zaki’s series Tahet El Wesaya and of course El Kebeer Awi part 7 because I love Ahmed Mekky.

7- What is your upcoming role?

My latest Egyptian movie Khamas Gawalat will be released over Eid El-Fitr. I am super excited about this movie because it is the first Egyptian film about mixed martial arts and marks my first leading role, so I hope people will like it. The movie houses a notable cast including Maged El Masry, Nour El Nabawy, Dalia Shawky, Aida El Ayoubi and Mostafa Darwish among others.
