CAIRO -8 March 2020: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit discussed on Monday with UN Special Envoy to Libya Jan Kubis the latest developments in Libya.

He also addressed means of pushing forward the settlement track to work out a political settlement in the war-torn country.

A reliable source at the Arab League general secretariat said Abul Gheit asserted during the meeting the Arab League's support to all efforts aimed at reaching an integrated settlement for the Libyan crisis until holding legislative and presidential elections set for December.

Abul Gheit also reiterated that such efforts could never be crowned with success without a full arrangement for implementing the ceasefire deal and bringing out foreign troops and mercenaries from all Libyan territories.

He renewed the League's backing for the UN role and endeavors meant to push forward all efforts exerted at the political, security, and economic tracks in Libya.

Kubis, for his part, expressed appreciation for the League and its member states, praising their supportive role at such a critical phase and highlighting the Libyan parliament's readiness to hold a vote of confidence over the new Libyan government lineup.

Libya, a major North African oil and gas producer, has enjoyed little peace since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, and the sprawling country has been split since 2014 between rival factions.

One is the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital Tripoli in Libya’s west, while the east is controlled by an administration backed by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).
