CAIRO - 21 January 2021: The Ministry of Health announced that 752 new coronavirus cases were detected on Thursday, the country's lowest number of daily cases since December 22.

This ups the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 159,715, said the ministry.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 54 coronavirus-linked deaths were registered over the past 24 hours, raising the overall death toll to 8,801 since the outset of the pandemic.

As many as 566 cases were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving the necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases so far to 125,171, the spokesman added.

In December, Health Minister officially announced that Egypt is facing the second wave of coronavirus.

The Cabinet, in response, announced further measures to curb the spread of the novel virus, including imposing an immediate fine on people not wearing face masks in closed places and public transportation. The decision came into effect on January 3.
